The course has been set for the second expansion stage of the Trianel wind farm Borkum

Trianel and EWE form a joint venture

2nd October, 2015, Oldenburg, Aachen. The municipally anchored EWE AG from Oldenburg and the cooperation of municipal utilities Trianel from Aachen have sealed a joint venture for the collaborative development of the second expansion stage of the Trianel wind farm Borkum (TWB II) with 200 MW. “Our partnership will benefit from different experiences,” stated Ines Kolmsee, Chief Technology Officer of EWE AG. “EWE can call upon its expertise from the development and operation of the first German offshore wind farm, alpha ventus, and the first commercial offshore wind farm, Riffgat. Trianel will contribute the knowledge it gained during the development of the Trianel wind farm Borkum, the first municipal offshore wind farm.” Kolmsee said: “We are delighted to press ahead with the expansion of the municipal offshore wind farm through this joint project as equal partners.”

In mid-July 2015, Trianel had put 40 wind turbines with a capacity of 200 megawatts (MW), which are located approximately 45 kilometres off the coast of the North Sea island of Borkum, into full operation. The cooperation agreed is an important precondition for the second expansion stage of the Trianel wind farm Borkum with a further 200 MW. “The joint venture with EWE provides the foundation for the planned decision to build during the next year,” explained Sven Becker, Management Spokesman of Trianel GmbH. “In EWE, we have found an experienced offshore partner which knows the specific investment conditions of municipal utilities,” asserted Becker. EWE and Trianel will work together to prepare the site for building. Initially, EWE will have a 40% share in the development of the project. Whether or not EWE will also provide investment for the actual implementation of the farm will be decided in 2016.

During the first expansion stage, Trianel created important conditions for enabling further development to 400 MW. As well as having received a licence from the German Federal Maritime and Hydrographic Agency (BSH), the on-site transformer platform is now ready.  “Trianel has put us in a fantastic starting position with its preliminary work. With our joint venture concerning the Trianel wind farm Borkum II, we will pool our strengths and ensure the second expansion stage is successful as well,” said Kolmsee.

Based on its expected 4,000-plus full load hours, the first expansion stage of the Trianel wind farm Borkum will generate roughly 800 gigawatt hours of electricity (800 million kWh) per year. This is enough electricity to supply 200,000 households. 33 municipal utilities and regional suppliers from Germany, the Netherlands, Austria and Switzerland, as well as the Aachen-based cooperation of municipal utilities Trianel invested around one billion euros in the first expansion stage of the offshore wind farm. Investment amounting to 800 million euros is required for the second phase. “After the decision to build during the next year, we expect building to begin in 2017,” stated Becker.
